Creative/Expressive Arts Therapy is an arts-based approach to psychotherapy that engages and supports the client through a process of creative expression to help them reconnect with their inner resources, personal inquiry, discovery and growth. It combines the visual arts, movement, drama, music, writing and other creative processes towards a multimodal approach within psychology, organizational development, community arts, social work and education. Creative Arts Therapists are highly skilled, credentialed professionals who have completed extensive coursework and clinical training. Treatment outcomes include, for example, improving communication and expression, and increasing physical, emotional, cognitive and social functioning. Creative Arts Therapists create nonthreatening group and individual arts experiences for the exploration of feelings and therapeutic issues, such as self-esteem or personal insight. It has been well researched to treat Alzheimer’s disease, chronic illness, head injuries, substance abuse problems, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities and many more.
